 2013 James W. Hatch Scholarships

The Pennsylvania Archaeological Council (PAC), in cooperation with the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, will once again award scholarships to enable students of archaeology in Pennsylvania schools and universities to attend the joint annual SPA/PAC meeting, April 19-21, 2013, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. We anticipate that at least two such awards of $100 apiece will be made. We encourage all current students in Pennsylvania high schools or universities with an interest in archaeology and the activities of the SPA to apply, although preference will be given to students planning to present papers at the meeting. Applications, in the form of a brief letter of interest explaining the student’s background and qualifications for the award, should be sent by mail or e-mail by March 31 to Paul Raber at:

Field Schools in Romania!

Fellow scholars, this summer Archaeotek (Archaeological Techniques and Research Center) is running two exciting field school opportunities: Experimental and Experiential Archaeology  – Living the Daco-Roman Synthesis (Late Iron Age/Imperial Rome) (June 2nd-June 29th, 2013) and a Bioarchaeology Survey and Workshop (June 30th - July 10th, 2013).  The Experimental Archaeology Project focuses on the Dacian Empire and the Bioarchaeology Workshop explores the Late Middle Ages frontier populations in Transylvania, Romania. Both projects are located in Romania. Brochures for the projects as well as application instructions are attached below. There is no set application deadline but spots are filling quickly and are usually filled up by early March.

I had the chance to participate in an Iron Age Excavation project with the Center this past summer with Mr. Gonciar and his team and can definitely say that I received real hands on experience in excavation, topography mapping, site documentation and trench mapping.  Romania is also a wonderful country to travel/sight-see in and it is not far travel from many other European nations. Many students from the dig team last year took the opportunity for sightseeing and visited nearby Austria and Hungary after the project concluded; travel is fairly cheap in the region.

Additional information on both projects (as well as those previously run by Archaeotek) can also be found at the following website:
